kohlhaas

Kohlhaas is a play by Isvan Tasnadi that follows a horse breeder who is taken advantage of by a corrupt government. Drawing extraordinary parallels to today’s political climate, this modern retelling of a medieval tale touches upon the subjects of justice, corruption, and the role government plays in our daily lives, shedding light on their continued relevance.
The play takes place within the “walls of justice”, inspired by the neo-classical style of typical government buildings. Scale plays a major element, as these large columns and marble statues tower over Kohlhaas, as a reminder of power inequality. Even when he “escapes” these structures, he is never truly free, and is always kept under the watchful eye of a higher authority.
